One of the key and recurring themes in Persian proverbs is the reference to various countries and cities around the world. This is true regardless of the fact that some of these countries or cities were once part of Iran's geographical domain in both the distant and recent past. Considering their current independent geographical and political identities, when we examine this subject more closely, we find that these lands are represented in our proverbs in several distinct ways and for various purposes. They serve as symbols of distant places, arenas for expressing linguistic, cultural, or behavioral contrasts between two geographically distant lands, and references to animals, plants, foods, clothing, goods, fruits, handicrafts, souvenirs, notable figures, the moral and behavioral characteristics of their people, as well as their history, geography, and natural attractions. Some proverbs convey a racist, combative, or critical viewpoint, sometimes explicitly preferring one’s own land over others, while others adopt a humorous or satirical tone. These proverbs also describe the beauty and splendor of cities or countries, the attractiveness of their people, and express a deep sense of longing for the prosperity and grandeur of foreign lands. This article, using a descriptive-analytical approach, explores and analyzes proverbs within this context.
