Abstract
Mythologies of different nations have a certain similarity and closeness with each other in various subjects. One of these subjects is the theme of “characters being rejected” from their family or land, which makes a comparative study of these narratives and stories possible. The present article, using a descriptive-analytical method and utilizing library resources, has studied the characters who are rejected in Iranian and world mythologies in world mythologies. The results of the research show that people are rejected for several reasons; including the ruler’s fear of endangering the government or killing his children, the child being ugly or defective after birth, the result of an illegitimate relationship with his mother, in which case he is rejected. The rejected characters are often the main characters of epics and myths. Most of them are also male, but in the epics and mythologies of some nations, women and girls are also rejected because of illegitimate relationships with one of the gods or heroes; Also, some newborn girls were rejected because the king wanted a male child. In many cases, these people were saved with the help of shepherds and hunters, or were raised with the help of animals such as bears, deer, snakes, wolves, etc. This upbringing by animals had a significant impact on the development of the personality of the rejected individuals, to the point that many of them, such as "Zal" in the Shahnameh, achieved a higher status than other humans.
